Bawdy, entertaining and with a strong cast of British talent, Richard Eyre’s cross-dressing period drama is an entertaining romp. Actor Ned Kynaston stars in all the best female roles (this being set in London in 1660 when women were not allowed on stage). Then Charles II changes the law, banning cross-dressing male actors and his career goes into freefall. For his dresser Maria however, it’s the opportunity she’s longed for.
